Givenchy is a French luxury brand. It was founded in the year 1952, which makes its existence 64 years strong. The founder of Givenchy was designer Hubert de Givenchy. Presently it is headquartered in 3 Avenue George V, Paris, France. Philippe Fortunato is the current CEO and Riccardo Tisci is the Creative Director of it. The parent service of the label is LVMH and revenue as per 2012 was 917.7 million Euros. It deals in haute couture clothing, accessories, fragrances, cosmetics and beauty care products and leather products. Not many are aware but this fashion house is a member of Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture et du Pret-a-Porter. This comes second after Dior in terms of total sales worth.
Hubert de Givenchy was more recognized for creating feminine clothing that included contemporary patterns and designs. He achieved critical appraisal after his first collection was featured in Vogue. The symbolic merchandise of that collection was the Bettina Blouse which was introduced as a tribute to Bettina Grazani (also immortalized in one of the paintings of Gruau). According to I’Album du Figaro, “In one night, Hubert de Givenchy became one of the fashion’s most famous children with his first collection”. The New York Times magazine appreciated the brilliance and fineness by stating “A Star Is Born”.
Big names of the tinsel town became muses for the brand. They include Dorian Leigh, Suzy Parker and Ivy Nicholson. In order to create chic and casual collections, he introduced the idea of ‘shirting’- a raw cotton which holds familiarity to that of pattern paper. In 1954, the first shirt dress of this brand was put on display to the world of fashion by Hubert. Three years later, the sack dress was presented.
A fact trivia for the readers, Givenchy was the first ever designer to create “Givenchy Universite”, which was a ready-to-wear fashion initiative by a luxury brand. It would use the machinery from America to carry out the work efficiently.
It also collaborated with Cristobal Balenciaga for the American Hospital in Paris in 1956. And the following year the sack dress was introduced by The House of Balenciaga. In 1971, he also launched the collection of embroidered coats as a token of respect for Joan Miro and Georges Braque.
The brand would not limit itself to mere apparel and began to deal in ties, tableware, upholstery, footwear, kimonos and jewelry. It had also designed the car- the Lincoln Continental Mark V.
Givenchy Inc. also got opened to public on Fifth Avenue in New York in the year 1976.
